SIR HERBERT SAMUEL

Born in Liverpool.

Jewish but renounced his Judaism to become a Zionist.

Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, then Postmaster General, then President of the Local Government Board, then Home Secretary.

He was the first to propose a British Protectorate in Palestine. This was made in early 1915 in his memorandum entitled The Future of Palestine.

Before this, his uncle Samuel Montagu, 1st Baron Swaythling, founder of the bank Samuel Mantagu & Co, in 1893 presented a petition to the then Minister of Foreign Affairs Archibald Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery, to ask The Sultan of The Ottoman Empire to allow Jewish colonisaton of Palestine. Primrose was the husband of Hannah de Rothschild and was a Trustee of the will of Cecil Rhodes.

Montagu had married the daughter of Louis Cohen, who was the nephew of THE Nathan Rothschild of THE Rothschild banking family. Rosebery had married Hannah de Rothschild, the daughter of the Mayer de Rothschild, also of THE Rothschild banking family.
