When Gaddafi was murdered in 2011 he was Chairman of the African Union.

Gadaffi was very, very, very pro-African Union. When he was elected Chairman in 2009 he insisted that all African nations should work towards an African Union, and he also said he wanted a single African military, a single African currency and a single African passport.

Note what happened with the EEC: the EU became an economic superpower, so much so that the EU-hating British Establishment had to join, and then UK GDP really took off!
