Shostakovich was the greatest composer to have ever lived: he took on Hitler as a fireman during the Nazi Siege of Leningrad; and stood up to Stalin knowing the people of Russia backed him. Stalin did not go after Shostakovich because he knew the people loved Shostakovich even though Shostakovich expressed his opposition to Stalin.
Thus Dmitri took on the two greatest tyrants of the 20th century...AND WON!
I'd forgfotten how great Shostakovich was until tonight. This is the closest version of Symphony 10 to my favourite, which is Carl Davis conducting the LPO.
