A CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES

When The Confederacy opened fire on Fort Sumter on 12th April 1861 the populations of the Confederacy and the Union were approximately as follows:
Union = 22 million
Confederacy = 9 million of which 4 million were slaves.

The Confederacy went to war to defend their freedom to keep slaves.

They were outnumbered approximately 4 to 1.

But they loved slavery so much that they were prepared to split the union and fight in a war that ended with approximately 700,000 dead and another 300,000 maimed or wounded. All so that they could be free to keep slaves.

There was even a draft in the Confederacy, but if you kept 20 or more slaves then you could exempt yourself, leading to some calling the war, "The rich man's war, but the poor man's fight".

Well, what would you expect from slaveholders? That they get slaughtered on the battlefield for their right to keep slaves?

MUGS!!

Would you go to war to defend slavery? And if so, even if you were outnumbered 4 to 1?
