I'm just watching the BBC period drama Testament of Youth again, and just noticed a massive difference between now and then.
Then, as a Christmas gift in 1914, Vera was sent a batch of books, which excited her greatly.
But now, we send each other DVDs jam-packed with violence and semi-pornography.
But then again, back then in 1914 we were marching towards each other through the mud of Northern France with a bayoneted rifle to a certain death.
I don't think that would happen now.
Is this progress?
