It's common knowledge that Trump's ties are "made in China," as the tags blatantly read. But one writer from Racked took the investigation a step further by traveling to China to locate the factories Trump uses.
After purchasing a $60 necktie from Trump's 5th Avenue building and examining the labels, writer Spencer Woodman tracked down a factory in Shengzhou that produces Trump's ties. Woodman interviewed the workers, and quickly learned that conditions are abysmal to say the least. Workers are paid not by the hour, but by the number of garments they produce. And forget about sick leave — if you don't work, you don't get paid. Staggeringly low wages means workers have difficulty covering basic necessities. Those who aren't able to afford rent opt instead for cramped, over-heated dormitories provided by the company. Eerily reminiscent of a Maoist dictatorship, Woodman notes, their belongings are searched, as they are forbidden from keeping valuables on them.
The hypocrisy in Trump's relationship to Chinese manufacturing is glaring. As the Republican presidential nominee, Trump has consistently campaigned to preserve American jobs, and even to have foreign workers removed from the country. Woodman's investigation not only confirms that Trump outsources jobs to China; it reveals that Trump's ties are made under horrific, sweatshop-like conditions.
Trump has yet to respond to Racked's new report, but continue to watch this space for updates.
