The Duchy of Lancaster is a source of income for the Queen. Prince Charles has the Duchy of Cornwall to himself, and releases information on where the money goes.
But The Duchy of Lancaster is a totally different beast.
This appointment would not have been made without the Queen's nod, because whoever is the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster knows how much money comes in and where the money goes out, but is not allowed to make it public.
Take a look at the previous Chancellors. 95% are Barons, Viscounts, Earls, Sirs. And in recent times the incumbent also has a 2nd government role, because the role is for just 1 day per week.
Gove is possibly Murdoch's favourite MP of all time. Murdoch even invited Gove to his wedding ceremony to Jerry Hall! But Priti Patel was also there, and she's now Home Sec.
Some may think this move by BoJo is a humiliation of Gove.
I'd say: Hang on a mo'.
