He's right though. If you are the occupying power, and provoke and then allow a horrific attack having secretly supported the attackers for decades, then claim self defence, it's just not cricket.
Russia is an occupying power in east Ukraine. The difference is that Russia was provoked into invading Ukraine by NATO, with their puppet threatening to ethnically cleanse east Ukraine of Russians and everything Russian.
