WHAT IS GOING ON IN SOUTH AFRICA?

What is going on in South Africa?

The CIA World Fact Book has this to say about South Africa:
South Africa is a middle-income, emerging market with an abundant supply of natural resources; well-developed financial, legal, communications, energy, and transport sectors and a stock exchange that is the 15th largest in the world.

black African 79%, white 9.6%, colored 8.9%, Indian/Asian 2.5% (2001 census)

Deaths (per 1000/population) = 17.36 (largest in the world)

Infant mortality rate (Deaths per 1000 live births) = 42.15 (in the top quarter)

Life expectancy at birth (in Years) = 49.48 (222 out of 223, i.e. almost lowest in the world, with only Chad lower)

Deaths from AIDS = 310000 (2009)

Unemployment rate = 49.8 (2011) (5th highest in the world)

Exports : China 11.8%, US 8.3%, Japan 6%, Germany 5.7%, India 4.2% (2012)

Imports : China 14.4%, Germany 10.1%, Saudi Arabia 7.7%, US 7.4%, Japan 4.6%, India 4.5% (2012)

The United Nations Human Development Index ranks South Africa as 121, number 1 being Norway.

So South Africa has an abundant supply of natural resources, and a fantastic legal system, yet the highest death rate in the world from AIDS, which I assume contributes to the high infant mortality rate and the low life expectancy. And despite this abundance of natural resources it is ranked only 121 in the world.

What is going on in South Africa?

How are people exploiting South Africa?

The fantastic legal, transport and communications are, I assume, for the 10% minority Whites.

Yet it has one of the best national anthems.
