MORE MISSION CREEP TOWARDS BRITISH BOOTS ON THE GROUND IN SYRIA

In 2013 there was a vote to back bombing Syria. The government lost, but said it didn't need authorisation but it would come back for authorisation in the future.

Several months ago the government told us that we were flying drones over Syria, for intelligence purposes only.

A few weeks ago the government told us that a handful of British pilots were involved in a joint operation bombing Syria.

We are now being told that drones, that were initially used for intelligence purposes only, are now being used to take out Islamic State members from Great Britain.

And now we are being told that British troops could be sent to Syria to establish 'safe zones' in Syria.

British forces could be deployed to Syria to help set up 'safe havens' for refugees, David Cameron said yesterday.

The Prime Minister – who has previously ruled out the idea – said yesterday that the creation of safe zones was 'certainly the right sort of thinking.'

He told MPs that Turkey and the US would need to contribute militarily, with Britain also potentially involved.

But he added that it would require a 'very significant commitment' to ensure these designated areas would be safe.

His shift came as two former Tory Cabinet ministers urged him to back the plan.

Former international development secretary Andrew Mitchell said there was now a critical need to establish safe zones to prevent millions of displaced people fleeing Syria.

He said he would support the use of British troops on the ground in Syria to help protect the new camps.

The RAF could also help provide the air cover needed to establish the safe havens.

'Ideally Britain would not be involved in putting troops on the ground but we should be willing to consider that,' Mr Mitchell said.

'Bear in mind that this is not the offensive action by troops that people in Britain sometimes recoil from, it is a defensive action, it would need to be done under the UN charter.'

Former defence secretary Liam Fox also backed the call for the creation of safe zones in Syria to help stem the tide of refugees heading to Europe.

Dr Fox said: 'It is time for the international community to accept its moral responsibilities and create a safe zone in Syria using its military capabilities.

'The pitiful sight of families risking their lives to escape the thuggery of [Syrian president] Assad or the barbarity of ISIS is beyond endurance for most decent people.

'Doing nothing is a policy position which has consequences we cannot tolerate.'

Speaking in the Commons, Mr Cameron said he had not yet seen a 'workable proposal' for safe zones, but said the issue was kept under review.

We invaded Iraq in 2003. Israel started a war on Hezbollah in 2006. We bombed Libya and assisted cutthroat Jihadis on the ground in 2011.

And since 2011 Syria has resisted the NATO/Zionist/Gulf-backed international cutthroat Jihadis for over 4 years.
