In the first public defence of GCHQ by a senior intelligence official, Parker said the agency had played a vital role in stopping many of the terrorist plots MI5 and the police had tackled in the past decade.
"We are facing an international threat and GCHQ provides many of the intelligence leads upon which we rely. It causes enormous damage to make public the reach and limits of GCHQ techniques. Such information hands the advantage to the terrorists.
"It is the gift they need to evade us and strike at will. Unfashionable as it might seem, that is why we must keep secrets secret, and why not doing so causes such harm."
In the speech, Parker also estimated there were "several thousand Islamist extremists [in the UK] who see the British people as a legitimate target". He said he thought the terrorism threat had not increased but was "more diffuse, more complicated, more unpredictable".
Parker said it would be impossible for MI5 to stop every plot, or prevent every attack. He argued that the agencies should have the capabilities they need and that scrutiny of their work was strong enough.
...MI5 has previously indicated Syria is "the destination of choice" for Britons seeking jihad. It is thought several hundred Britons have travelled to Syria over the past two years to fight with the forces seeking to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad.
"A growing proportion of our casework now has some link to Syria, mostly concerning individuals from the UK who have travelled to fight there or who aspire to do so," Parker said.

Here, the new chief of MI5 Sir Andrew Parker warns us that
1. "several thousand" Jihadis see the muggins British taxpayer as a legitimate target
2. that Syria is being used as a training ground by these Jihadis
3. GCHQ is tyring its hardest to stop their plots but needs more power and rinky dinky stuff
But perhaps all three are linked.
In May this year Drummer Lee Rigby was horrifically attacked on the streets of London by two men with machetes. They hacked at Rigby, causing fatal injuries, and then proudly talked at length on camera about their motives for the attack before charging at armed police and being shot.
And in the media that is where the story ended.
But it turns out that one of the attackers, Michael Adebalajo, was
1. under MI5 surveillance
2. had been asked to spy for them on Jihadis but refused to cooperate
3. allowed to preach Jihad on the streets of Woolwich begging Muslims to join the Jihad in Syria against Assad.
This at first sounds cray-zee, that MI5 would allow a Muslim to preach Jihad on the streets of London begging Muslims to go to Syria to cut the throats of Syrian children, but in MI5-land it makes perfect sense. This is because MI5 had a Covenant of Security with Islamic terrorists which allowed them to base their HQs in London and preach Jihad in order to provide cannon fodder for the holy wars that benefit the British Empire. This is the source of that Abu Qatada/Finsbury Park Mosque scandal. The former French foreign minister Roland Dumas has stated that he was asked by British officials in 2009 to help them to prepare the Jihad in Syria against Assad, that war being one of seven revealed to General Wesley Clark shortly after the mother of all inside Ziojobs 9/11.
So we have to ask why are people like Adebalajo allowed to preach Jihad and beg for Muslims to join the Jihad against Syria on the streets of London, only for the new head of MI5 to preach to us, the muggins British taxpayer, that Syria is now a focus of Jihadis who are training over there to come back here and blow us up, so therefore we must give up all our freedoms?!
Either
1. Sir Andrew Parker is a total plonker, or
2. is trying to take us all for mugs.
Either way Parker has to go.
No doubt there are some Jihadis who were not manufactured on this British Jihadi factory conveyor belt who need watching.
But we know the vast majority of them are being manufactured to scare the shit out of us so we cede our rights and privacy.
And it is not working anymore!
