In The Independent today, Cockburn tells yet another half-truth: that some Western politicians should be blamed for the rise of Islamic State.
A strange aspect of these conflicts is that Western leaders have never had to pay any political price for their role in initiating them or pursuing policies that effectively stoke the violence. Isis is a growing power in Libya, something that would not have happened had David Cameron and Nicolas Sarkozy not helped destroy the Libyan state by overthrowing Gaddafi in 2011. Al-Qaeda is expanding in Yemen, where Western leaders have given a free pass to Saudi Arabia to launch a bombing campaign that has wrecked the country.

In this Cockburn is correct. But Cameron and Sarkozy are just middlemen at most, if that.
And as usual, Cockburn protects Israel.
As reported by Seymour Hersh in March 2007 in The Redirection, the USA, Israel and Saudi Arabia agreed that the latter would unleash the worst international cutthroat Jihadis onto Syria, Lebanon and Iran. I believe that this decision was taken because the original plan A had failed, in which, as revealed to General Wesley Clark shortly after 9/11, the USA would execute war and regime change in seven countries in five years: Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, Syria, Sudan, Libya and Somalia.
However, the Jihadis were first unleashed onto Libya, and they were actually al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. These cutthroat Jihadis were given cover as 'freedom fighters' under the US State Dept-engineered Arab Spring.
After killinig Gaddafi these Jihadis and their weapons looted from Libya's arsenal were smuggled into Syria.
Cockburn covers up Israel's role in all this, specifically that it was the Zionist Project for a New American Century which laid the political foundations for the wars through their documents and their close links to the authors of A Clean Break, and the very powerful positions they held on 9/11.
