Before the European settlers landed on the east coast of what is now the United States of America, human beings did actually live there. It was not a land without people. Over the next few hundred years those native American Indians were killed and herded, including by the hero of many President Andrew Jackson on his Trail of Tears, into reservations of ever decreasing size.
