1. Alex's family on both sides are descended from men who fought at the rank of colonel and general in the Confederate Army fighting to preserve negro slavery;
2. half of Alex's family are CIA, and his late uncle Biff was some kind of liaison between the CIA and Reagan's Latin American death squads in Guatemala (Biff was named after the founder of the Ku Klux Klan, Nathan Bedford Forrest);
3. Alex's father has done work for the CIA, and introduced Alex to the extreme right-wing John Birch Society;
4. Alex has admitted to working with 'factions' inside some intelligence agencies because they consider him to be 'from the right stock' due to point 1. above and his family's involvement in Texas politics (whatever that may be, and Texas was a Confederate state and was made a republic to preserve negro slavery after Mexico made it illegal).
