This is very, very bad news.
Leeds hate MUFC.
Absolutely detest MUFC. And I don't know why.
I was in a packed pub in Leeds city centre a few years ago watching the Manchester derby. There were less than 5 MUFC in the pub. The rest were Leeds supporters with a few City supporters.
There was no bother between the MUFC and MCFC supporters. Just friendly banter, that's all.
But the Leeds supporters were singing the most diabolical songs about MUFC, including several very drunk renditions of Who's That Dying on the Runway, with several Leeds supporters standing up and raising their glasses with both joy and aggression.
Disturbingly, none of the City supporters requested the Leeds fans to stop.
It was very sad to see.
There's rivalry. And then there's pure unexplained hatred.
And it both bewildered and scared me.
Leeds can be a good place to live. Lots of parks. Great views from Roundhay Park. Many Victorian arcades in the city centre. The best pizza from Harpo's. I can highly recommend several fish and chip shops. And the surrounding countryside (to York and to Harrogate, and Ilkley) is some of my favourite.
But underneath all that is this frightening thuggish element that cheers flight disasters involving rivals.
Where does such hatred come from?
