There is no reason for Syria to bring down a Turkish jet fighter in any airspace other than Syrian, because it could very easily be used as an excuse by NATO to declare war. What would happen if an Iranian jet fighter violated British airpsace?
And it is equally foolish of Turkey to deliberately send a jet fighter into Syrian airspace to be shot down because Turkey would be viewed by the world as the aggressor. But because Turkey is not neutral in the warmongering in Syria I would not put this dirty trick past them, because they have been arming and training and protecting the Syrian al Qaeda rebs for well over a year now and know that NATO will back them up in any conflict with Syria.
But as Gul basically says, "Hey, these things happen."
Turkey’s President Abdullah Gul said Saturday the jet fighter shot down by Syria might have violated Syrian airspace.[source : Turkey downplays ‘ill intentions,’ says downed jet may have violated Syrian airspace, al Arabiya, http://english.alarabiya.net/articles/2012/06/23/222231.html, 23/06/2012]
“It is routine for jet fighters to sometimes fly in and out over (national) borders ... when you consider their speed over the sea,” Gul told Anatolia news agency. “These are not ill-intentioned things but happen beyond control due to the jets’ speed.”
A few weeks ago several bullets fired by the Syrian Army at Syrian al Qaeda rebs, who were escaping to Turkey for protection after they had killed several Syrian soldiers inside Syria, violated Turkish airspace. Turkey threatened war but in the end did nothing explicit, but escalated the collaboration with the terrorists by allowing the likes of the CIA etc to arm the terrorists.
