In the film Gladiator there is a scene in which Emperor Marcus Aurelius tells his son Commodus that he, Commodus, is unfit to rule and will not be the next Emperor of Rome, and that instead General Maximus Meridius will rule as Protector of Rome until a fair and uncorrupted government of Rome can be established.
Commodus is very angry at this decision and then murders his father and names himself Emperor demanding total allegiance from General Maximus Meridius.
