This is what we are told happened.
But despite the apparent outrage and anger in Anglo-American political and military circles, members of those particular circles were cheering, and rubbing their hands with glee at the wars that they would now be allowed to prosecute.
This is because a year earlier an organisation had published a document entitled Rebuilding America's Defenses in which they expressed their intent to wage simultaneous wars around the globe to assert US hegemony, but with the caveat that they needed "a new Pearl Harbor" to provoke support for such wars. That organisation was The Project for a New American Century, and its members and founders included:
Dick Cheney - Vice President
Donald Rumsfeld - SecDef
Paul Wolfowitz - 2nd SecDef
Jeb Bush - brother of Prez W, and governor of Florida which Jeb swung to W when Florida was widely expected to get behind Gore.
Shortly after 9/11 General Wesley Clark was told of a plan for war and regime change in seven nations in five years.
We were told that an extensive dossier would be provided on Osama bin Laden's guilt. The USA never provided one. The FBI never explicitly listed 9/11 as a crime for which he was wanted. The 'evidence' provided by the UK government was flimsy and even they admitted it would not stand a chance in court.
Before 9/11 Osama bin Laden was in the crosshairs several times, but either the nod for his assassination was never given, or offers to have him extradited to the USA were never taken. In July 2001 bin Laden was in hospital for kidney dialysis.
In the few public statements that bin Laden made shortly after 9/11 he never claimed responsibility for 9/11.
But then in December 2001 a video was 'found' which we were told showed bin Laden claiming responsibility for 9/11. However, bin Laden was tall, frail, gaunt and thin, suffered from Marfan Syndrome and required frequent kidney dialysis. The alleged bin Laden in the December 2001 video was short and fat. Subsequent 'videos' of bin Laden suggest that a look-a-like was being used. Tapes allegedly of bin Laden's voice have never been verified as his.
There is strong suspicion that bin Laden died in December 2001 from Marfan Syndrome. After 9/11 he was global public enemy number one, yet he needed frequent kidney dialysis. So you do the maths.
We have to ask, how could a weak, rotting man who needed frequent kidney dialysis who had to drag a kidney dialysis machine behind him, evade the NATO war machine for 10 years, when all that NATO did in Afghanistan was to restore opium harvests to record levels?
The only evidence we have that Osama bin Laden was at the compound in Abbottabad was yet another video that was 'found' which allegedly showed bin Laden watching telly. However the video was shot at a very strange angle which did not show bin Laden's face in full.
The raid on that compound was comical. One helicopter crashed. Neighbours and eyewitnesses living close to the compound strongly dispute the official story. Bin Laden's corpse was allegedly buried at sea, though no US Navy sailors have said they were on the ship that allegedly carried bin Laden's corpse and saw his corpse buried at sea, and no photos of his corpse have been released, but the reason for this is because, they say, he was riddled with 100 bullets, each member of the kill team allegedly unloading their magazines in to him as he allegedly lay dead on the floor having been shot in the head three times.
Now this guy Robert O'Neill has come forward to claim that he was the man who killed bin Laden. But this is being disputed by members of the special forces.
Members of the US Navy Seal commando team that killed Osama bin Laden are disputing who actually shot the al Qaeda leader.
Yesterday it was reported that Rob O'Neill, a former SEAL, was claiming to have fired the fatal shot that hit Bin Laden in the forehead after O'Neill stormed into a room in Bin Laden's house in Abbottabad, Pakistan three years ago.
But the claim by O'Neill, who travels the country giving motivational speeches, has now been countered by a source close to another SEAL team member.
The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the team member told him the fatal shot was fired by one of two other men who entered the room before O'Neill.

No doubt in the future someone else will come forward with a different tale that contradicts what we have been told so far.
When it comes to Osama bin Laden we cannot believe anything we are told. A series or wars in North Africa and the Middle East have been unleashed by NATO to grab natural resources because of bin Laden. If the myth of bin Laden is blown then the wars will stop.
Hence the attacks on Russell Brand, who is at least questioning 9/11.
And hence why I am suspicious of Stop The War who still push the official story, thus giving the warmongers some credibility, while they also protect the real culprits of WW1 - the British monarchy.
What we can say for sure is that NATO succeeded in restoring opium harvests to record levels after the Taliban had eradicated the crop, yet over a period of 10 years somehow failed to find the man who allegedly did 9/11, who suffered from Marfan Syndrome and required frequent kidney dialysis, only finding him when President Obama was in serious political trouble because of a huge scandal surrounding his eligibility to be President.
