President Donald Trump appeared to dash the hopes of interventionists and contradict his own administration officials, by declaring that US troops’ mission in Syria is limited to defeating ISIS and doesn’t include regime change.
We’re there for one reason: to get ISIS and get rid of ISIS, and to go home,”Trump said on Friday, during a joint press conference with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull at the White House. “We’re not there for any other reason and we’ve largely accomplished our goal.”

But not accoring to David Satterfield, who is US Assistant Secretary of State for the Middle East.
According to Satterfield:
David Satterfield confirmed that President Trump has decided to maintain a large US military presence in Syria, despite the victory over the "Islamic State Organization" (Daesh); the cost of this maintenance being set at $ 4 billion annually. He said that this US military presence should prevent any resurgence of Daesh but, above all, to prevent the Iranians from what he called as settling permanently and imposing themselves in the search for a political solution".

According to this Fars News report, the USA is staying Syria to break it up and to stop (ie confront) Iran. The basis of the report is a leaked diplomatic telegram:

No wonder Bomber Trump was stuffing his face with chocolate cake when, after years of warning Obama to get out of Syria, he decided, at the first opportunity he was given, to bomb Syria, killing Syrian civilians and military personnel. If I was Alex Jones I would hang my head in total shame. Jones very loudly called out Rick Perry as a Bilderberg traitor. So what does Trump do? Yup. Picks Perry for Energy Secretary, but also picks many members of the swamp (Bilderberg, CFR, Skull & Bones) as well as selling out to the Anglo-Zionist-Saudi axis-of-evil that did 9/11.
And now here we have Trump saying publicly that he is in Syria just to defeat ISIS and then get out, while in private he has agreed with this Small America Group on Syria to stay in Syria to partition it and stop Iran.
