If you have not done so already then you should take a look on Wikipedia on how NATO has expanded from an initial group of 12 nations to now having 31 members and most of eastern Europe.
Then you should also know how after WW2 the Nazi apparatus was taken in by founding members of NATO.
There is a deep fear in Russia about NATO because of this.
And as covered recently, the chief of NATO admitted that the war in Ukraine is about NATO expansion to include Ukraine.
Maybe Russia decided that Sweden and Finland joining NATO is a price worth paying to stop Ukraine joining?
