Besides letters and memorandums, some of the clerical advisers of the Archduke prepared for him elaborate theses on political issues. Father Herman Gruber, S.J., wrote a Denkschrift in three volumes about "the role of Freemasons in contemporary revolutionary movements since 1776", with all the necessary references and footnotes. Repeating the opinion that the French Revolution had been the product of Protestants and Freemasons, Father Gruber asserted that there existed an international revolutionary secret society of Freemasonry which was fomenting revolutionary action in all parts of the world. He claimed that the revolution in Brazil in 1889, the uprisings in Cuba in 1899, the revolution of the Young Turks in 1908, and the revolution in Portugal in 1910 were all organised by Freemasonry. He put the particular blame on French Freemasonry and its Grand Orient Lodge, "which after 1789 was the main factor provoking revolutionary movement in the whole of the world, and its utmost trusted helper was Italian Freemasonry."
To support this allegation, Father Gruber quoted John Strachan, whom he described as a leading English Freemason--"Indeed, Freemasonry is in such bad odor on the continent of Europe, by reason of it being exploited by socialists and anarchists, that we may have to break off relations with more of the Grand Bodies who have forsaken our landmarks."
Regarding Brazil in 1889:
Once the republic was implanted, Deodoro would assume power as head of the Provisional Government, with a cabinet totally composed of freemasons: Quintino Bocayuva, in Transports; Aristides Lobo, in Interior; Benjamin Constant, in War; Ruy Barbosa, in Finance; Campos Salles, in Justice, Eduardo Wandenkolk, in the Navy, and Demetrio Ribeiro in Agriculture. These men were chosen because they represented – with the exception of Ruy Barbosa – the cream of the “Historic Republicans”, who by a happy coincidence, belonged to the Grand Orient of Brazil, in a time when Freemasonry was the home to the best men in the country and the intellectual elite of the nation.
On December 19 that same year of 1889, a little more than one month after the establishment of the Republic, Deodoro, as head of the provisional Government, was elected Grand Master of the Grand Orient of Brazil. As of this date, the positivist “Benjamin Constant matrix” takes over the power in the GOB.
