Because they have, or soon will have, the technology to travel to and colonise those planets.
This UFO abduction/abuse/sighting business etc is just a cover story. Theories pushed are that abucted/missing people are used as lab rats and/or for sex slaves.
But what if such abductees are being used to experiment on colonisation of exoplanets?
I mean, the moon? Pfft. Your local astronomical society would see this fron their living room.
Mars? Russia and China would notice this too? Unless they're in on it too.
But a far away exoplanet?
Because soon, due to the extreme capitalist system we live under (which Infowar$ appear to love), planet Earth will be so fubar that, like Gaza in a few years, it will be soon be uninhabitable.
And our elite will gladly leave us, around 9 billion at the time when they betray us, to die here while they laugh all the way to their chosen exoplanet(there may be more than one)...where over the centuries they and their offspring will do the same thing over again: exploit the planet's natural resources for their personal maximum profit, screw the planet and its colonisers/slaves to the max, and then abandon that exoplanet for another exoplanet.
So I ask: will this be the first time this has happened? Or are we the 2nd? 25th? 117th? 1639th?
Did we come here by spaceship, used to exploit this planet's resources, only to be abandoned as our space-elite take off pretty sharpish with a bunch of slaves to colonise the next exoplanet?
So I say NO to research into exoplanets. Re-direct the finance into research, and dissemination of that research, into our elite.
